Our teacher uses the classic example of Sodium Chloride (NaCl). Sodium (a metal) has 1 electron in its outer shell and wants to lose it. Chlorine (a non-metal) has 7 electrons and wants to gain 1. Sodium completely transfers its electron to Chlorine. Sodium becomes a positive ion (cation), and Chlorine becomes a negative ion (anion). The strong electrostatic force that pulls these oppositely charged ions together is the Ionic Bond.
